Ladies: Update Your Appearance!

by Rosa Chillis on March 29, 2010

“I have always believed that fashion was not only to make women more beautiful, but also to reassure them, give them more confidence.”

–Yves St. Laurent

Updating your appearance from head to toe will give you an immediate lift but suggestions to do so could fill volumes. I don’t dare enter that jungle! Instead, I’ve offered a few timeless ideas to get you started.

#1: Hair
See a professional hairstylist. You’ll need to know the best hair length for your age and the hair color rules. One woman I know decided to go gray. Would that work for you? She said not dyeing her hair was about discovering her true identity, which she found exciting and liberating. Whatever you decide, your hair should blend so perfectly with your style that no one notices. Are you high fashion? Are you conservative?

#2: Smell
Overwhelming strong odors repel. During the job search in particular, I recommend choosing products that are odor-free. Dirt smells. Follow the basics of good hygiene and wash your clothes, shower daily, and wear deodorant.

#3: Face
Are men expected to wear makeup to the job interview? Of course not. So it is up to you whether or not to wear makeup or let your natural beauty show. In fact, it is far better to wear no makeup than to wear it badly.

#4: Clothing
Plan the image you want to project. The safest clothing choice would be the classic “uniform” or businesslike dress, according to the position and office culture (based on your research). Most experts suggest on a job interview dressing one step up from the office staff. We dress to define ourselves as businesspersons or students; as serious or playful. Clothes communicate!

#5: Accessories
Investing in a quality briefcase, handbag, and wallet is a good idea. But as far as jewelry is concerned, subtle is best.

#6: Shoes
Quality counts. Invest in a good pair of leather shoes. Classic pumps will make the legs appear longer, slimmer, and shapelier. Pointed toes emphasize the slenderness of the foot and the leg. Never wear heels that are so high that you feel off-balance. If you’re a plus size petite, for instance, you don’t want heels that look too delicate or fragile. While they don’t need to be chunky, try for shapely and well proportioned.
